About Sophie Brooks Kim
I am a Registered Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (#136832) in Santa Monica, working under the supervision of Shelby Stone, LMFT (#112223). I work with children, adolescents, and adults.
My approach to therapy is warm, relational, and thoughtful. I believe the meaningful change happens when we feel truly seen, heard, and understood. I am especially drawn to working with sensitive and insightful clients navigating anxiety, self-criticism, perfectionism, or challenges within family relationships. I take an individualized approach to support each client in building insight, confidence, and a stronger sense of self.
Approach
I have always been interested in the stories we tell about ourselves and how those stories shape our experiences. My work is grounded in an attachment-based approach, where the therapeutic relationship becomes a foundation for healing and growth. When you feel deeply heard and connected, it creates a safe space to explore your emotions and confront challenges.
I integrate cognitive and mindfulness-based techniques, tailoring my approach to meet the unique needs of each client. I also incorporate Brainspotting, a brain-body based approach that helps process and release trauma and other emotions held in the nervous system.
With children and teens, I incorporate play, creativity, and curiosity into sessions to support emotional expression and regulation in ways that feel engaging and natural. I also collaborate with families to better understand their child’s needs and strengthen connection at home.
Experience & Credentials
I hold a B.A. in Journalism from the University of Southern California and a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology with an Emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy from Pepperdine University.
I have completed training in Interpersonal Neurobiology through the Mindsight Institute, led by Dr. Dan Siegel, and have completed advanced training in play therapy through the Center for Connection. I am also trained in Brainspotting therapy for working with trauma, emotionally overwhelming experiences, and any “stuck” places. My clinical work is informed by trauma-informed and somatic approaches, and I am committed to ongoing learning and growth.
My experience includes work in both academic and private practice settings. I completed extensive training at the Pepperdine University Counseling Center, where I provided individual therapy, group therapy, crisis support, and outreach. I also completed my traineeship at Coastline Community College, offering psychotherapy services to students in a specialized program supporting individuals recovering from traumatic brain injury (TBI).
I am a member of the California Association for Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT).
