Brainspotting Therapy

Where you look affects how you feel. - David Grand

A brain-based therapy, Brainspotting therapy powerfully targets, processes, and helps release trauma, emotions, physical sensations, and other “stuck” symptoms through the use of specific spots in the visual field. Using fixed eye-positions to access and process emotions and trauma stored in the subcortical brain, Brainspotting more rapidly resolves these issues than traditional talk-therapy, which engages the neocoretx (thinking/conscious brain). Similar to EMDR Therapy, Brainspotting facilitates the brain’s own natural healing by targeting the part of the brain that stores and controls memories, emotions, and the nervous system. Used for more than trauma, Brainspotting effectively targets “stuck places” and/or symptoms, bringing faster relief and resolve.

How does Brainspotting work?

We first take inventory of the issues clients would like to process (memories, thoughts/beliefs, emotions, physical symptoms, etc.) and personal resources, while familiarizing clients with the Brainspotting process and therapist. From this foundation, we use specific spots in the client’s visual field to connect with the subcortical brain to process what the client has identified. Assistive bilateral music, alternating eyes, and other strategies can be used during Brainspotting to facilitate the client’s processing. Using the brain’s natural healing abilities, we strengthen new neural pathways to decrease reactivity, increase self-regulating abilities, and promote healing. Essentially, Brainspotting helps to calm the nervous system while releasing stored pain.
